Our Story: Gorilla Socks and two men with a dream

On the banks of the Hudson river, two men ride their bikes. It’s like any other day, with the exception that something big is bound to happen. One of the men speaks up to his companion about their lack of entrepreneurial ventures. The spirit is there but there’s been no ideas. The other mentions bamboo fibers. Suddenly, a new idea is born, and those two men’s lives are changed forever.

Every great company starts with a dream and Gorilla Socks is no exception to that. Founders Gavin Kamara and Gianluca De Stefano were two university flat mates with a dream of social entrepreneurship. They didn’t just want to be business owners, they wanted to affect change in the world with their brand.

On the market, they noticed there was a lack of a superior product. Everyone sells socks, you can get a pack of them at your local superstore at any time. But they wanted to sell something better, well made, long lasting and fun to wear. Both founders loved socks, and with Gavin’s bamboo fiber idea, it all came together perfectly.

So why is bamboo better? There are several reasons that not only make it comfortable but eco-friendly. Bamboo fiber is antibacterial, anti-fungal and odor resistant, making it the perfect material for something that will be on your feet all day. Bamboo fiber is also perfect at thermoregulation so these socks will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

It’s eco-friendly in that it needs less water to grow, in fact it requires less than 1/3 the amount of water required by cotton to grow. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, so it only makes sense economically and in its effect on the planet.

Gorilla Socks is not only about it’s quality product, though it’s about giving back too. Gorilla Socks has an exclusive partnership with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. Dian Fossey was a zoologist, primatologist, and anthropologist who dedicated 18 years of her life to studying and perfecting this method and her work still lives on today through her fund. This fund makes a point to put Daily Protection, Scientific Research, Educating Conservations and Helping Communities at the forefront of their efforts in conservation.

The mountain gorillas, like the whole gorilla species are in dire trouble. The WWF has Mountain Gorillas marked as “Critically Endangered” with less than 900 gorillas in the entire world. Critically Endangered is only one step up from extinct in the wild.

Gorilla Socks is the company that helps build a bridge between you and this amazing fund. 10% of your purchase of these premium socks goes to this great charity. Whether it’s a purchase for a more casual look or fancy, your socks will look perfect, add a touch of fun and really show that you care about Mountain Gorillas.

Two men with a dream made it happen through hard work, dedication and spirit to support those in need. Gorilla Socks is a company that deserves praise for all these efforts.
