If you’re an entrepreneur just starting out, you’re your own boss for quite possibly the first time in your life. With no one on your back about it deadlines, it could be easy to fall into a pyjamas-all-day routine.

However, that’s never going to get your business off the ground at the speed you’d like. It can be hard to stay motivated, but these positive habits will help.

  1. Get out of the house

If you work from home, you can feel increasingly cooped up as the only movement you get is the few steps from your bed to the desk! Make sure you’re seeing different environments and getting some stimulation.

Though a good walk or a gym session will work wonders, an even better solution is to take up residence in a co-working space, like Creative Cubes. Co-working spaces are perfect for start-ups as they’re full of like-minded go-getters.   1. Challenge yourself

There’s no two ways about it – starting a business is scary. But you need to take risks to see reward. There was a time when I was keeping my family afloat only by means of credit cards and a home equity line, which definitely wasn’t something I was comfortable with, but had to be done for the later success of my business.

Putting yourself outside of your comfort zone will become something that’s required of you more and more as your business grows – even the simple things like accounting and doing your own taxes can be scary! But by forcing yourself to succeed when these challenges arise, you’ll learn skills you never thought you would master.

  1. Plan

I’m all for taking risks and just going for it, but it’s still hugely important to have an overarching business plan – particularly one that covers your finances.

Planning is also a great way to visualise the smaller steps you’re going to have to take in order to reach your bigger goals. A five-year plan might not be necessary at the start-up stage, but a one-year one definitely is. Having big dreams and knowing where you eventually want to get to never did anyone any harm, and it’s great to have something to work towards.

  1. Be collaborative

This is so important as an entrepreneur, but it’s often a hard lesson to learn – you can’t do everything on your own, however much you might want to. Your new business is your new baby, so it can be incredibly hard to relinquish even the smallest amount of control.

But once the business starts growing enough for you to think about taking on staff, this is exactly what you’ll have to do. Encouraging others and inspiring them to have the same belief in your business that you do is one of the most important things you’ll do. Making sure you’re in a positive environment is key – that’s why I enjoy working at Creative Cubes so much, as we actively look for those who have the same positive attitude as those of us already here.
