The top three questions every entrepreneur should ask themselves to help boost workplace productivity

Productivity is key to the success of any business. But with so many factors influencing the output of staff, it can often be difficult to keep your workforce motivated and happy. Great company cultures are imperative in today’s working world, which is why it is important to take a proactive stance and eliminate any productivity killers, before they result in low morale. So in order to get the most from your business and employees, ask yourself this question – what kind of workplace am I running, and how is this affecting productivity and morale within my company?

If you’re not convinced you’re pushing your business to its full potential, follow my tips for enhancing productivity and ultimately, creating a stronger workforce.

Do you encourage a good work-life balance?

One of the key areas to be aware of when looking to increase staff productivity is work-life balance. It’s vital that you encourage staff to get this right, otherwise you could risk employees burning out or becoming fatigued and stressed, neither of which rings good for your company. By promoting a healthy balance, and ensuring staff take the appropriate time out to relax, be that evenings, weekends or on annual leave, you can help your workforce to recharge.

And, while getting the most work out of your employees is important to businesses of all sizes, your workers need to enjoy their private life. Promote a culture where taking work home or answering emails out of office hours is not the norm. There will of course be occasions when staff may need to put in some overtime, but as a general rule of thumb, try to encourage your team to go home and switch off. That way you know that employees are arriving for work, refreshed, productive and ready to go!

Do you motivate and reward?

It’s important that you motivate your staff and reward them for their successes. This does not mean micro-managing and being involved in every step of the process! But, if you notice an employee who has done particularly well, or gone above and beyond their day-to-day job, be sure to recognise them. Not only this, but workplace perks are a great way to reward and motivate staff.  These can be as extravagant or inexpensive as you like, it’s really up to you. By organising staff social events, offering free gym membership or whatever you choose to do for your team, you can show that you appreciate their efforts, without having to break the bank.

Do you communicate effectively?

It’s important that the lines of communication are always open across all aspects of the business. This will help your staff to approach you or a co-worker should they incur any problems. Think of your business like a machine; all the components must work together to achieve the end result. Strive to support a culture where everyone feels like they are part of a team, not just individuals. This will inevitably encourage staff to help one another and will ultimately lead to a better finished product.

Communication is also key when it comes to setting goals, expectations and company values. You need to make sure all your staff are on the same page and know what you expect from them. When everyone has a shared sense of what they’re working towards, and can work together to achieve this, morale will remain high!

Fostering a great company culture and rewarding staff for their efforts will drive your employees to keep working harder for your business. Not only because they are incentivised to do so, but because they appreciate the recognition and want to continue contributing to the success of the company. Furthermore, ensuring staff have a good work-life balance will enable them to take time out to recharge, so they are operating at maximum productivity during working hours.  Running an open and friendly workplace is key to keeping morale high, creativity flowing and staff working hard!
